CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Saint Francisville, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana

Twenty years ago…

The gunshot rang out over the otherwise calm summer day. The distinct sound of a bullet clearing its chamber ringing in my ears.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

My body trembled on the floor, and I nailed my hands to my ears to muffle the sounds. The entire house shook under the boom of weight collapsing to the ground in the next room.

“Die!” Mama screamed gutturally. “Just die!”

I struggled to slow my breathing as I listened intently over the muffs of my hands. There was a low gurgling bubbling in my throat, followed by a soul piercing sob that took me a minute to register belonged to me.

Everything in my body told me to pick myself off of the ground and run, but I remained on the ground, a whimpering pile of skin and bones crying for a daddy that I knew with certainty was dead in the next room.

I didn’t move when Mama’s nimble footsteps glided across the floor, not even the floorboards dared to squeak. She came to stand in front of me. Her shadow loomed over my body, blocking the stream of sunlight that shone through the window. Lowering into a squat, her hand fisted into my shaggy hair, peeling me from the floor.

Blood splatters painted her cheeks like rouge, and her expression was so eerily calm. The corner of her bottom lip bled from a slight wound there, the impress of Daddy’s fist painting her cheekbone in shades of purple and blue.

He’d gotten her good before she’d… I let out another pained wail.

What was she going to do to me?

“You quit that cryin’, or I’ll give you somethin’ to cry about, you hear?” she soothed, her voice coming out closer to a lullaby than her intended threat.

“Y-y-you,” I stammered, barely registering the pain as she pulled my hair tighter in her fist until my spine caved and I bent, my hands dropping to my sides.

“I, what, boy?”

“You killed him.”

She seemed to hum and hah on it for a moment, before making some kind of decision. “I sure did,” she offered, heaving a sigh of relief while a smile twisted her thin pout. “And I’d reckon it’s your fault, too, don’tcha think?”

“M-my fault?”

“I told you to keep watch for your daddy, and you didn’t,” Mama said, clucking her tongue against the roof of her mouth. “You’re just as guilty as I am. You helped me kill him.”

“But I didn’t—” My little heart roared in my chest, my hands trembling at my sides like the rattlesnake Daddy killed in our yard a few weeks back.

I wondered if he considered that he’d be meeting the same fate so soon.

“You didn’t do as you were told, now he’s dead, and that’s your fault.” She cracked her open palm against my cheek so hard, my brain shifted in my head. I tried to meet her stare, but the pain blurred my vision, my leaden eyes growing unfocused. She heaved a bored sigh, shoving me to the ground. “I have a mind to just leave you here with him.
